I am surprising my fiancee for his birthday with a weekend getaway to New Orleans next weekend (8/17). I need help in these two areas. We are staying at the Hotel Monteleone. I pretty much planned our itinerary as far as places to eat and activities during the day (8/17, dinner @ Muriels, 8/18 bkfst at the hotel, spa for him 11am-1pm, lunch @ Cafe Degas, etc, dinner at Dominique%26#39;s Restaurant, 8/19, Brunch @ Court of Two Sister%26#39;s and then we head home). My question is the nightlife. Aside from Bourbon Street, are there any nightclubs or lounges that has an area to dance? I%26#39;ve heard that on Magazine Street I may find a few places, but I found that reply a bit vague. Where should or can we go in addition to Bourbon Street for good drinks, good music, and a good crowd)? BTW. I am 30 and he is 36. In addition, I%26#39;ve never been to New Orleans in August but I %26#39;ve heard it is the slow season, does that mean there isn%26#39;t much activity especially post-Katrina? Will there only be a sprinkle of people? Did I choose the wrong place to celebrate his b%26#39;day? He loves activity and enjoys having a good time. I%26#39;ll appreciate any help anyone can give me in response to my very long message. BTW. If you have any suggestions as far as activities during the day, please let me know. It%26#39;s been a few years since I%26#39;ve been to New Orleans. THX!
New Orleans in AugustAlmost all the clubs on Bourbon St have space to dance with large variety of music from rock, zydeco, C %26amp; W etc. Just walk up the street and stand out side and find the music you like then head in and enjoy yourself...Some of the popular spots are : Utopia, Razoos, Tropical Isle, (2 Locations), Cat%26#39;s Meow, (Karaoke).
Monteleone has the revolving bar and piano music..Pat O%26#39;Briens has the dueling piano bar and Hurricane drinks...For a quieter bar go to the Bombay Club for a cocktail and they usually have live music later at nite..located in the Prince Conti Hotel complex.
After a nite out on Bourbon St may take you a while to recover...Enjoy the French Market..Cafe Du Monde for Beignets..Walk and shop along Royal St...Jackson Sq for a buggy ride thru the Quarter and to people watch...numerous museums, eg National WW 2 D-Day Museum, Historic homes...grab a cold Daiquiri from one of the numerous shops. drink plenty of h2o to stay hydrated and have a great time in the Big Easy!!!
New Orleans in AugustActually Faubourg-Marigny has become the new %26#39;hot spot%26#39; for clubs and music (around Frenchmen St.) Snug Harbor, Applebarrel, Spotted Cat etc. I see you listed brunch at Court of Two Sisters...Arnauds or the Rib Room might be better choices but thats just personal preferences. Please write a review of your trip and findings for food and entertainment. Have a great time.
I%26#39;d definitely skip the Court of Two Sisters and substitute Mr. B%26#39;s or Marigny Brasserie for brunch.
The crowds are definitely lower in the summer but there are still plenty of people around. It%26#39;s very hot, so pace yourself accordingly!
I was there last weekend and could not believe the crowds. For August, anyway...it seemed like the city was very crowded. In a good way.:)
Thousands of people on Bourbon, Harrah%26#39;s casino was packed all weekend when I stopped in, the Monteleone was sold out or close to it...
P.S. I have real mixed feelings on the Court of Two Sisters also...great atmosphere, medicore food. Nothing ';horrible'; about it, just nothing to write home about.
Since you are at the Monteleone..you must experience Mr. B%26#39;s...so close you could smell the great food.
I%26#39;ll join the chorus suggesting a place other than the Court of Two Sisters for brunch. Great ambiance......marginal food.
Thank you all for your input. I really appreciated it. If you have any additional suggestions PLEASE let me know. Once again, THANK YOU!
Just chiming in also to agree that you should go somewhere other than the Court of 2 Sisters for brunch (do a forum search under ';brunch'; for some ideas). Good call staying at the Monteleone, which since you asked about nightlife, has a nice bar. If you want nightlife other than Bourbon, I%26#39;d definitely suggest heading over to some of the bars in the Frenchmen Street area just on the edge of the FQ. Lots of live music and a much more appealing crowd than Bourbon IMHO! ;)
