As one of the other posters mentioned -- it gets confusing reading about the hotels/B%26amp;B%26#39;s but I%26#39;m ready to listen again :o)
I%26#39;m looking for a place that has: Queen or King beds, Non-Smoking, a porch or balcony that we can sit out on, NOT on Bourbon Street (we%26#39;re 47 and 53 yrs old - we like to party and get out, but when we want to sleep, we%26#39;d like quiet) and some type of breakfast offered. Every place I%26#39;m finding though, unfortunately, seems to have higher rates because of some Surgeon%26#39;s convention. (Oct 6-8)
We%26#39;d like to be within walking distance or an inexpensive cab ride to the French Quarter. Any suggestions to finding something UNDER $135 per night? Also if they accept AAA or Military ID%26#39;s for discounts would help too. Thank you!!
Robin
Another Hotel/B%26amp;B question
If there%26#39;s a medical convention in town, good luck. Rates are always higher during these shows.
B%26amp;Bs may be your best bet although I have no idea who%26#39;s got availability and at what rates. bbnola.com is the website for the city B%26amp;B association so you may try that. I think MOST B%26amp;Bs are either walking distance to the FQ (int he Marigny) or easily accessible via bus/streetcar (Uptown/Mid City).
Good luck to you! Let us know what you decide.
Another Hotel/B%26amp;B question
You might want to consider the Royal Street Courtyard Bed and Breakfast. They have availability according to their website, and their rates are in your price range. The website says non-smoking. Trip Advisor reviews are very positive. It might be worth checking out.

The O%26#39;Malley House meets all of your requirements. The property is in Mid-City, about 1/2 block from the Canal St. streetcar stop, and taxis from there to the FQ/CBD are reasonable.
Try the Marigny Manor House, they have a room with a private balcony. Continental breakfast (danish yogurt etc) and very good hosts. On the corner of Frenchman St. A 5 minute stroll to decatur. Great bars 2 minutes walk away.
I second the suggestion for the O%26#39;Malley House. We just returned from there, and love it! I%26#39;ve stayed there twice, and been pleased both times.
I would suggest the 905 Royal Hotel/B%26amp;B. It%26#39;s not to far away from the attractions, but far enough away where you can sleep in peace and quite. They have a couple of rooms with an outside balcony or porch, their rates are reasonable and their inn is clean and secure.
Hey Robin, one of my absolute favorites is the Maison Dupuy in the French Quarter which has been recently renovated, is removed (but quite walkable) to Bourbon Street, has lots of king beds, and has many balconied rooms with tables and chairs overlooking their lovely interior courtyard with pool. The price MAY be a sticking point because any time there is a big convention or event in town the rates go up (sorry, that%26#39;s simple supply and demand at work), but it may be possible to get a room there for $135 or less (on my last stay I paid $139 for a king balcony room and that was during a special event weekend).
I would also second tooltimeterry%26#39;s recommendation. Though we personally prefer the Maison Dupuy (bigger, more amenities) we have several friends that absolutely ADORE 905 Royal and absolutely will not stay anywhere else. In fact, two of our buddies are staying there over Halloween weekend, and do so every year!
Thank you all for your thoughts and comments -- I%26#39;m still searching because they all sound so nice, and then I look at the pictures -- wow -- hard to decide.
Any thoughts as to staying one night in the Garden District and one night in the French Quarter? I%26#39;d like to experience as much of the area as we can - and even if everything is within a 10-20 minute walk or drive from one central hotel/B%26amp;B, I was wondering if only staying one night in each location would be worth it?
Also -- any thoughts to the (Natchez) Paddleboat ride? Would you recommend a lunch or dinner cruise?
Sorry - I just want to make the most of this trip and trying to put as much in to a 3 day visit as I can.
Thanks All!
