Early Sunday Dinner near W Hotel on Poydras

My husband is taking our daughter, a high school senior, to visit with several college representatives visiting New Orleans this Sunday, September 9. Meeting will be held at the W Hotel on Poydras beginning at 7:30 p.m. Any suggestion for an early dinner on Sunday which would be close by either in the Quarter or Warehouse District. She has been to Palace Cafe and loved it.

Cafe Adelaide, just across the street at the Loews New Orleans. Like Palace Cafe, it%26#39;s owned by some of the Brennan family and is a great place.

Whatever you do, don%26#39;t eat at the W%26#39;s restaurant. It%26#39;s really not good.

That is a wonderful rec. Many thanks.

And around the corner from Palace is Mr B%26#39;s Bistro, another Brennan place. First or second block of Royal, I think. Or, first block of Bourbon is Bourbon house, back side of Sonesta Hotel, I believe. Or across from it is --- which fish place?

I vote for Mr. B%26#39;s - it%26#39;s got a great, fun atmosphere, and would be a very comfortable place for a high school girl (not too stuffy), and they serve top notch food. And, it%26#39;s only a couple of blocks from the W Hotel.

Great to hear she%26#39;s visiting college representatives in New Orleans - I hope that means she%26#39;s considering one of our excellent colleges. Good luck to her!!

As a side questin to the regulars -- Mr. B%26#39;s Bistro was highly recommended on here, so I finally went there. So many places, so few days on each trip! They were recommended for the BBQ Shrimp. Wonderful! As the waiter kept saying, as he supplied me with more napkins, ';They%26#39;s messy but they%26#39;s good.';

Those huge shrimp, in the shell, were in a dark brown sauce. I assume its base was a roux. But there was still some other flavor. I have tried to recreate it at home, but can%26#39;t come close to the flavor I still remember. Anyone have any idea of the added ingredients?

P.S. Palace Cafe is escellent, but very formal. Mr B%26#39;s is just as good, same price range, but really laid back. Dress is anything ok. And while Palace is more traditional Cajun and Creole,Mr. B%26#39;s, in an inerview I saw, Dickie sought to combine traditional NO ingredients in a variety of styles of cooking from severa different continents. His European training paid off.

Young C - We can%26#39;t tell you what%26#39;s in BBQ shrimp (yes, they are fantastic - I can walk there from work, and they have great lunch specials - part of the reason I just can%26#39;t leave New Orleans), so you will just HAVE to come back again!!

Seriously, I don%26#39;t know how they are made, but I know that there are a ton of New Orleans cookbooks, so I%26#39;m sure you can find a good recipe. My mom was the editor of all of Paul Prudhomme%26#39;s cookbooks, and I%26#39;m sure he covered BBQ shrimp, and if so, I would trust his recipe, because he truly is a food genious.

Glad you had a good time in my home town - please come back any time!

come back anytime? Heh! It%26#39;s been at least 14 years, first once a yearm, then twice.... to the point I%26#39;m thinking about retirement property there, if the market ever settles down.

Paul P%26#39;s books, I have a couple, plus about 6 of Emeril%26#39;s, and the ';Best of'; series, and a few private editions.

Meantime, a new discovery not mentioned on here often,is the Pelican Club, in Exchange Place. Formal service but not stuffy, and a great menu. In about the same price range as the others. Nice bar up front. But even when it is packed, somehow I am able to relax there more than in the others. Perhaps it is the carpeting muffling the noise, and table spread farther apart. I would recommend Pelican for a romantic evening, business meal, or simply relaxing pleasant experience.

And I know, I would seldom pay these prices at home. But hey, it%26#39;s a vacation!

Google Mr B%26#39;s BBQ Shrimp Recipe and several show up..Enjoy!!

ILoveLouisiana-can%26#39;t wait to hear about your dinner, especially if you go to Mr. B%26#39;s. I%26#39;m planning to go there in Oct.

nolachar- tell your mom thanks. I love the Louisiana Kitchen cookbook. Wondering if the Coconut Beer Shrimp, which is on Mr. B%26#39;s menu, originated when Prudhomme worked at Commander%26#39;s.

SoDakMac-just to see if there%26#39;s was much different from my recipe, I googled. I%26#39;m not surprised the first link came from someone in my hometown of Fort Wayne, IN. Not quite so much as New Orleans, but definitely a foodie town.
