Is the St. Charles streetcar line up and running? What about the other lines?
St. Charles streetcar line
The St Charles one is not but there is a bus that runs its route. I think the other ones are though (Canal and Riverfront). We will see this weekend!!
St. Charles streetcar line
After returning to Nola on Sept 7th and seeing the flood water on Carrollton and jungle of debris on St. Charles, it does not surprise me that the streetcars and tracks had significant damage and are still not running on that route. I, along with the rest of the city, have great anticipation for the return of the old screech and clang. For Canal St. and Riverfront streetcar info, go to www.norta.com and click on routes.
The green St Charles cars are currently doing the riverfront past the French Quarter and the Canal and Carrollton street runs. Busses are being used on St Charles Ave until the tracks and power are restored. The red cars are under repair at the Canal St barn.
Is the St. Charles streetcar line now running?
It is partially functional. From Canal to Lee Circle.
From the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority website:
The Central Business District loop of the St. Charles streetcar line (from Carondelet and Canal Streets to Lee Circle) resumed operation on December 19, 2006, 7 days a week, from 9 am to 6 pm. The 1920s St. Charles Perley Thomas streetcars are also running on both the Canal Street line and the Riverfront line. Because all 24 candy-apple red Canal Street streetcars and six of the seven Riverfront streetcars were flooded after Hurricane Katrina, the historic green cars, which all survived, are running on both of these lines. To enjoy the attractions on St. Charles Avenue and Carrollton Avenue, take the RTA St. Charles bus, which operates on the same route that the St. Charles streetcars did before Katrina. For route and schedule information, access the Routes section on this Web site. The overhead electrical system was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Although work has begun on replacing the poles, pole foundations, and the overhead electrical system on the St. Charles Line, the complete project will not be finished until spring 2008. RTA expects to have an extension to the service to St. Charles and Napoleon operating by Fall 2007.
