Best time to visit New Orleans?

My hubby and I are thinking of visiting New Orleans sometime 2008. Dates are flexible right now. Any suggestions on the best time? Don%26#39;t want it too hot/humid, but like to comfortably walk around in shorts %26amp; tank top.

Also, any suggestions on what to do or where to stay? I%26#39;ve always wanted to visit for the culture and history of the city. So we don%26#39;t want the heavy commercial type places. I%26#39;m also a big Anne Rice fan! We enjoy having some beverages, but don%26#39;t want a big college fraternity vibe - not too dowdy or party, right in between. (been there, done that)

All input is greatly appreciated.

joc, we are looking for the same thing. We settled on a May trip. It%26#39;s not super hot, yet and nice enough to enjoy the pool and wear shorts and T%26#39;s.

PS, my son goes to Quinnipiac, not too far from you!

Best time to visit New Orleans?

Spring is my favorite time to visit New Orleans. There are many festivals at this time. French Quarter Fest, St. Patrick%26#39;s/St. Joseph%26#39;s weekend, Spring Fiesta (www.springfiesta.com) are good events.

I suggest a small hotel in the FQ or a B%26amp;B in the Faubourg Marigny.

I have stayed at the Frenchmen, Hotel Villa Convento and St. Marie and enjoyed them.

I suggest you search B%26amp;Bs here on Trip Advisor for the Marigny neighborhood. I like the Cresent City Guesthouse.

Barb, thanks for the tip. May is definitely an option, as it%26#39;s our anniversary too. I love traveling in the Spring to warmer places too. It makes me feel like summer is a little earlier!

It%26#39;s funny you say your son goes to Quinnipiac and you%26#39;re from RI. I went to URI!!

So did I!!! Class of 82 and 84 for Masters. My youngest goes there now.

Hi joci - We found this weather site helpful in planning when to visit:

www.srh.noaa.gov/lix/html/msy/climate.htm

If your interested in an intro to NO culture %26amp; history the National Park Service hosts a free walking tour of the FQ. The NPS FQ office is on Decuter(sp). You search on this site for NPS walking tour.

Also check out Preservation Hall for traditional jazz. The NPS also has a jazz interpretive center on the river side of the french maket. We saw a great free concert there one afternoon.

Enjoy.

I always suggest people go during the French Quarter Festival in the spring. It%26#39;s in April and the weather is usually wonderful. www.fqfi.org will give you more details. It%26#39;s nothing like the typical mardi gras crowd, either. It%26#39;s an annual trip for us going on 7 years now. The festival will give you lots to do but all the other tours will be available too. I only suggest you give yourself plenty of time to explore. There is so much to see and do and eat that you will need it.

Best time to go to New Orleans: ALL of the time!

If I had to choose though, I%26#39;d say October.

We%26#39;ve been there the months of September, October, November and December multiple times, and we prefer October -- it%26#39;s not humid (for the most part), not much rain at all, and you%26#39;re able to kick around in shorts %26amp; a tee, or a short sleeved shirt and jeans. Very comfy month.

September and November were rainy for us.

December is a weird month - one year it hit the 80s with tons of sunshine, then another year it was humid/drizzly/cold and impossible to stay warm.

Barb, my 2 best friends and I were class of 93. A little after you.

How does your youngest like it now? I hear it%26#39;s extremely different from when we went!!!

joci, we just moved him in last weekend and except for a few new buildings, it felt the same!!! Kind of like time stood still. It was weird!

He is a transfer student from Lasell in Boston, so this is his first year there, but so far so good.

I%26#39;ve visited New Orleans every month and I%26#39;m always happy to be there. The hot is very hot and the cold is very cold. The weather can be strange. I%26#39;ve been in August when the temps were in the 80%26#39;s (no joke) and I%26#39;ve been in November with 85 degrees one day and 50%26#39;s the next. I finally learned to pack for anything.

Spring is great (FQ Fest is a good time to visit....like an Arts Festival on a HUGE scale).

I%26#39;m with travelori on this one--October is amazing. You%26#39;ll probably be able to pull off your shorts and tank tops during the day with light jackets for night.

There are festivals and events during this time that are worth looking into.

Frenchman Street is festive without the Frat party vibe--and not a bit dowdy.

The residential side of the French Quarter is my favorite area for accommodations. There are some wonderful small hotels. You might also look into B%26amp;B%26#39;s in the Marigny.
