Will this work/ideas please. We are thinking about flying into Houston and making our way to New Orleans. From the UK there are no direct flights to New Orleans. We were in Texas this April and had a great time - thus we would also like to have a couple of nights in Austin in the clubs. We would have 10 full days in USA.
Great advice received for our last trip and made it wondeful.
Road Trip March 2008
You certainly can add Louisiana to your agenda- but consider a few things like: you can fly into NO in about 45 min vs a 6-7 hour drive in a rental car. The flight opens up all the possibilities in NO for wonderful food, music and sightseeing so if your time is limited this may be your best option. Or you can take your time relax and explore the smaller town with wonderful Cajun culture along the way- there is great food, music and sights all along the 1-10 highway just waiting for you. There is also a regional airport in Lafayette that has service from Houston which puts you right in the middle of ';Cajun Country';. Not as crowded and far less traffic, plenty of really friendly people and a whole lot of fun in it%26#39;s own right. Hope this helps- and definitely come to Louisiana

I second Cajungirl%26#39;s recommendation for you to to fly. Austin is three hours from Houston by car, in the opposite direction from New Orleans. If you want to visit both Austin and New Orleans within a 10 day span, air travel would make much more sense to me than driving. You can easily fly from from Austin to Lafayette, the heart of Cajun country, where you could rent a car to explore that area before driving to New Orleans (about two hours).
There%26#39;s not many direct or non stop flights in and out of New Orleans any more. I would definitely fly from Houston to New Orleans. It%26#39;s a quick flight and you%26#39;ll add an entire day of sightseeing in N.I. to your trip by doing so. Driving the I-10 is pretty boring unless you stop along the way. If you%26#39;ve booked your round trip flight already, consider trying Southwest airlines with one way fares. You can fly to New Orleans, fly to Austin, then drive back to Houston for your flight home. I hope you enjoy your trip.
I live in the UK and worked in Louisiana in the New Iberia area off and on from 1997 to 2002.
I no longer visit there for work but have been back every year since for a holiday.
I have done the road trip to and from Houston several times and it is a long drive with not much to see but if you plan to spend a little time in Texas and then go over to Louisiana then its not too bad, it is around 6 hours though.
Louisiana on the whole is a great friendly place, when I go nowadays I split my time between Covington (north of New Orleans) and New iberia mainly because I stay with friends but both locations are good for exploring.
New Orleans is great for a lively weekend too.
I always fly into New Orleans flights are easy from the UK with a change in Chicago, Philladelphia, New York or Miami depending on your choice of airline all usually get you there early evening.
Beware of September and October as its hurricane season otherwise enjoy the great cajun food and friendly people.
