I used to serve with one of the non-profits that supported Cafe Reconcile, and ate there pre-Katrina. It was good! But I haven%26#39;t visited since then...perhaps one of the regular posters can help out with a post-K opinion.

I eat there every couple of weeks for lunch. It%26#39;s good, not great. The nice thing about it is that the staff is ';at-risk'; kids who are training for the hospitality industry. So you leave feeling good and feeling full, which is a nice combo. The food is typical New Orleans soul food variety -- fried chicken, pork chops, meatloaf, fried fish, etc, and changes by day.
After Katrina, the restaurant did a ';cafeteria'; setup where you waited in line, got your food and found a table. They are back to table service now.
The location on Oretha Castle Haley means you probably want to take a cab as the neighborhood, while not inherently dangerous, may be intimidating to some. (Uglesich%26#39;s, a block away, had the same issues).
Definitely try it out!!
Thanks caseyno and cajun - I have been to Uglesich%26#39;s so now I know a general idea of where it is. Sounds like it is for a good cause so we will definitely make a point to go there.
jlr...please do take a cab and have your cell phone and cab number for the trip back also. The location in Central City is not a place for strolling around.
Is is safe to take your own vehicle? We drive to New Orleans and always have our own vehicle, so never use a cab. When we went to Uglesich%26#39;s a few years ago, we drove ourselves and never had a problem. Thanks for your advice....
I think its fine to take your own vehicle there during daylight hours.
