Okay so i am attempting to make an itenerary now and am overwhelmed by all the restraunts i am reading about..
what are 7 restaurants i must try?
bars/lounges that are cool for the weekdays and weekends?
is there stff in the daytime i must see?
I will b e in NO for a week 10th-17th! staying at club la pension!
Coming to NO this friday! Restraunts, Bars, Daytime hangouts
2 restaurants I would throw out are Mr. B%26#39;s and Coops.
Bars I always have a drink at are Carousel Bar, Jean Lafitte%26#39;s Blacksmith Shop, Tropical Isle, Pat O%26#39;Briens and Napoleon House.
Plenty of stuff in the daytime to keep you busy. With a whole week to burn you can take it easy which is the best way to do it. Take some tours, ride in a buggy, go to Mardi Gras World (I still have never been but want to go), walk down Royal Street once or twelve times, people watch (I prefer to do this from a balcony with a nice refreshing drink), explore the French Market if it is up and running and last but not least EAT! If you like history do not miss the DDay Museum.

As a local I would never %26#39;throw out%26#39; Mr. B%26#39;s or Coop%26#39;s. Depending upon your budget and wanting to get a rounded menu perhaps...I guess I%26#39;d pick Muriels, K-Pauls, Gumbo Shop, NOLA, Dickie Brennans,GW Fins, and Commanders Palace. And for Italian-Irene%26#39;s. But less costly alternatives would be Acme, Cafe Maspero, Coop%26#39;s. Try Mr. B%26#39;s for lunch-and try the BBQ shrimp.
And I know I%26#39;ve forgotten some favorites. Its still early here.
also, there was a very good thread on New Orleans restaurants not long ago - I will try to locate this and ';bump'; it for you - lots of good information there.
Have fun! You will love it!
I know that this may not relate to this thread, but I keep hearing so much about Coops on this forum, and when I tried to eat there earlier this summer I was treated very rudely. I was told by several local people that the owners ';don%26#39;t like tourists';. I ask because I am returning soon and have heard so much about the reasonable food there. I would try it again if I thought that our treatment was a one time only thing.
ManyPurrl, we ate there in April and had no problems. The waiter was very nice and the food was great. We plan on eating there again when we go in October.
We went to K Pauls last October even though the food was great we had a horrible waiter. So I guess all restaurants have an off day but I understand your hesitation about going back though.

Get out of the tourista Quarter and try Cafe Degas in the Faubourg St. John, then go to the museum of art. Pal%26#39;s Lounge is around the corner, great jukebox! Museum and Degas are both closed on Mon and Tuesday. This is a very beautiful part of town, there is the Bayou St. John and stores and restaurants.
I finally fpound Coop%26#39;s the last two of my fourteen trips. The manager there, and I think he was owner or art owner, coujld not havebeen more friendly or helpful. We talked of many things --- clubs, music, real estate, the recovery, economy, his plans to open a branch, etc.
Certainly far from rude.
The bar and kitchen staff may by appearance seem a bit unusual, if you are from more conservative cities, and are not used to tattooes, long hair, and very casual (non-Polo) clothing etc. But that is the population -- Don%26#39;t make assumptions on appearances.
Re: Cafe Degas rec - I love Cafe Degas, but just FYI: You will need to drive (rent a car) or take a cab if you want to go to Cafe Degas. You could potentially take the streetcar, but it doesn%26#39;t have a set schedule that I know of and it would be a bit of a hike from the last stop to walk to Cafe Degas - I wouldn%26#39;t want to do that in this heat!
I was in Coops at the begining of June, the barman was very friendly. Had great Jambalaya and my husband had good fried chicken both for under $10 each.
I guess I really worded that wrong. I was throwing that in the ring for consideration. Those would be the two I would recommend. Our service wasn%26#39;t that great at Coop%26#39;s either but the food was great.
