Stanley wins out over Starbucks at Jackson Square

From nola.com, some great news!

-----

The Louisiana State Museum%26#39;s board of directors voted Monday to accept local restaurateur Scott Boswell%26#39;s proposal to lease the Lower Pontalba Building space formerly occupied by La Madeleine French Bakery and Restaurant.

The ground-floor space facing Jackson Square at Chartres and St. Ann streets is considered a prime commercial location, but it has been vacant since Hurricane Katrina.

Starbucks Coffee Co. also had been interested in leasing the site, but it recently withdrew its application.

Boswell has said he plans to open a Stanley restaurant much like the breakfast-and-lunch place he ran at 1031 Decatur St. for a year after Katrina. The restaurant would feature a ';great New Orleans brunch, po-boys, real New Orleans food,'; he has said. It would include at least 50 dining tables plus a soda fountain seating 50. Opening is expected in late fall.

Boswell also operates the more upscale Stella Restaurant at 1032 Chartres St.

Why would they want ANOTHER Starbucks? Isn%26#39;t there one a bit past the Jax Brewery on Decatur?

I want to try the stanley/stella restaurants and if this new one is open by november i%26#39;ll definitely be stopping in. Thanks for the update!

Good. There are enough Starbucks around. If anything they should put a Caribou there. Much better coffee and atmosphere.

I am so excited!!! Yahooo!! This will be so great for the Jackson Square area. Starbucks can open up somewhere else. :)

This is great news, CajunWave.

Any feedback on the quality of the Decatur %26#39;Stanley';?

Would the locals mind keeping us up to date on the JS Stanley progress, especially when they get close to, or actually open?

TIA.

That is good news. I was in NO just this past Sunday and it was kind of strange to walk through Jackson square and not see a La Madeleine%26#39;s full of people on that corner. The place going in there sounds really good.

Not a fan of Stanley but Stella rocks! One of the top restaurants in the Quarter, I think.

Sad to hear Madeleine%26#39;s is gone. Loved that place--

There%26#39;s only 1 La Madeleine%26#39;s left--it%26#39;s on the corner of St. Charles and Carrolton (I think). We ate there Monday morning for breakfast. It was pretty good but the service was a little off at times. They were out of some things and I asked for chocolate crossiants to go only to discover later that day that I%26#39;d been given chocolate chip cookies instead. Oh well...another poster on this board pointed out that lots of people working in the restaurant business now may be new to it b/c of Katrina, so we%26#39;ve got to cut them some slack. Anyway, I miss the La Madeleine%26#39;s on Jackson Square too. I hope this new place will do really well.

Wow the other day when we were watching the closure of Starbucks in the Eternal City China my husband said when we were there in June he saw a petition to stop Starbucks from opening a shop in Jackson Sq. GREAT GREAT news, it would have been a Mcdonalds next.
