Fairmont to reopen as a Waldorf=Astoria

The former Fairmont Hotel has been sold to a new hotel management company and will reopen as a Waldorf=Astoria property following a $100 million renovation. It will be 500 rooms, about 200 rooms smaller than the Fairmont, since the new hotel won%26#39;t incorporate one of the three buildings which made up the old property. Opening date is uncertain since final plans haven%26#39;t been developed between Hilton (the Waldorf owners) and the new management team.

I%26#39;m thrilled to get this hotel back in service as well as to get such a great hotel name in this market. I%26#39;ve stayed at the W=A in New York several times and I love it.

(By the way, Waldorf uses the double hyphen ';='; between Waldorf and Astoria, so I did too! It was intentional!)

CajunWave - That is great news!

I hope they maintain the Fairmont tradition of Christmas decorations. The lobby is so beautiful during the holidays!

I second JJNOLA%26#39;s comment...I was looking through some photos the other day and found one of my kids from a few years ago, taken by the giant gingerbread house and underneath all the ';snow'; and lights. We do miss the decorations! Maybe next year...

CW, Good news indeed!

While checking out their website I noticed the double hyphen between Waldorf %26amp; Astoria as well. Interestingly different.

Fantastic news!

This ought to bode well for the historic Sazerac Bar, too. (One of the most beautiful bars in the city until management slapped a huge flat-screen TV on the wall. Maybe the Waldorf will show some class and nix the TV!)

CajunWave,

This is great news! I remember seeing the original Supremes in the Blue Room in the 70%26#39;s, as well as taking my children to see the wonderful Christmas decorations. Let%26#39;s hope the Waldorf=Astoria management keep the Blue Room, Sazerac Bar and the Christmas traditions alive.

Great new for New Orleans, doubt if I wil be able to afford to stay there though. Will take a look on our next visit.

That is fantastic! I too hope the Christmas decorations come back

I don%26#39;t know if they will consider reflagging the hotel with the Waldorf name. I%26#39;d love to see ';The Roosevelt, A Waldorf=Astoria Hotel'; or something like that. Lots of NOLA old-timers have fond memories of the Roosevelt.

I love that idea.
