Two great April music festivals are French Quarter Festival (April 11-13, 2008) and the first week of the famous New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, commonly known as Jazz Fest (April 25-27 and again May 1-4).
FQ Festival is FREE. Jazz Fest tickets run about $40 a day.
If he comes during non-festival times, there%26#39;s still a lot of great music out there.

I have been to just about every type of fesitval that New Orleans has, and in my opinion, French Quarter Festival is the best. There will be many stages set up thruout the French Quarter for every type of music you can imagine. One year, my husband and I heard zydeco, blues, jazz, rock, classical, gospel., opera ..just about everything except country music, but I imagine it could be found somewhere. The best part is that it is all free, and the music is performed by local musicians, not big-name acts. They also have the %26#39;worlds largest jazz brunch%26#39; along the riverfront, and many of the restaurants set up stands and sell food outdoors. It is an absolutely wonderful time of year to visit. I have been to Jazz Fest, too, but definitely prefer French Quarter Fest. Also, the hotel prices will probably be somewhat lower during French Quarter Fest than during Jazz Fest.
You can get on the website fqfi.com and find information from last years French Quarter Festival, which will give you an idea of how much goes on.
