My husband and I are planning a trip to New Orleans in Sept. I have been trying to read as much as I can in order to make an informed decision on a hotel to stay at. I%26#39;m more confused then ever. Book It seems to have some great deals. Having never been to NO it is hard to make a decision. We are older and won%26#39;t be out partying late. We would like a smaller, historic hotel. We love to walk and sightsee but are concerned with safety. Any suggestions? We are very excited to visit New Orleans. Thanks in advance.
Hotel Help
My wife and I have been going for years and are not big partiers either. We like a small hotel called Place d%26#39; Arms. The rooms are nice and the courtyard is beautiful. The have a nice breakfast area that serves complimentary juice and coffee plus danish and pastry.
We take ours out to the courtyard and enjoy the view. The hotel is very near Jackson Square. We have never had any problems with saftey in all our trips there.Place d%26#39; Arms has a direct website that always seems to have the best rates. This is the first time I have ever posted so I hope it%26#39;s some help to you.We also love WDW too!

I know I toot this horn too often, but please consider the Place d%26#39;Armes. It is exactly what you picture in your mind when you think of a New Orleans hotel. I was in a group of women, and I think we were safer in that area than many other places walking at night. Being able to walk half a block and see Cafe du Monde, the Cathedral, Jackson Square and the river front all at once is a selling point all its own. Also, the staff can call excellent cab drivers for you. The gentleman they called for our ride back to the airport was the best cab driver we have ever had.
I would highly recommend the Place D%26#39;armes, our favorite FQ hotel, for all the reasons already stated. Location, Location, and Location with good staff, courtyard, atmosphere, and the european style cafe for the complimentary continental breakfast is great for people watching.
My husband and I stayed at Le Richelieu our first time to New Orleans and enjoyed it. It has free parking which is a rarity in the French Ouarter and very nice helpful staff.
It is kind of ';dated'; but very clean and had very comfy beds. Check out the reviews here on TA.
Also the location is good and in the quite part of the Quarter:)

Are you very picky witih where you sleep? I know a lot of people here love the Place D%26#39;Armes, but I had a very bad experience there. I loved the staff, and the location. You did really feel like you went back in time, with the buildings, but that%26#39;s where the magic left. My room was very dirty, dustballs, cobwebs, mold in the tub and bathroom mirror. There was something that looked like vomit on my blanket, when I pulled the spread back. The bathroom is old, they didn%26#39;t upgrade at all, and it is small and you will find mold. Some say it is because of the humidity, but like a waiter said to me one night, when we were talking about where we were staying, ';humidity has nothing to do with clean., we don%26#39;t all live with mold';...This is very true. When I stayed at Harrahs Properties, they were spotless. The cleaning staff, left our dirty cups in the room, and a used bandaid , I found on the tub, sat there through my entire stay. To be fair, I went after Katrina, and they were short on staff, but there are still mixed reviews on the place. If these things don%26#39;t bother you, they probably have one of the nicest pieces of property over there, with a lovely courtyard. It all depends on what you are looking for. Good luck.
Again..mittmott..we had this topic before as you stayed at the Place D%26#39;armes during the switchover period from housing emergency workers (FEMA ETC.) And before the place was possibly ready for full tourism as they never have that kind of complaint once they came back into full touris mode and had the %26#39;full staffing%26#39;. A number of hotels housed emergency workers and they were pretty rough on their quarters.
Its hard to characterize nearly 9 of 10 reviews being highly positive as %26#39;mixed reviews%26#39;. for the Place D%26#39;armes. The hotels are old renovated buildings in the French Quarter and the rooms are traditionally smaller (more European style) and smaller bathrooms in many cases and small lobbys or hallways but thats the charm of the Quarter. People should not expect the %26#39;resort%26#39; atmosphere in a quaint, historic french styled architectured building and that goes for all the hotels in the quarter. The %26#39;new%26#39; hotels are more modern styled and space is more but their efforts for giving it the FQ feel are pictures on the wall and a fountain here or there. Give me the historic building anytime
We did find mold at the Place d%26#39;Armes, and the curtains were torn, the carpet was dirty, the door was questionable.............but the sheets were clean, and the towels, and the tub and toilet. I guess I just don%26#39;t really notice those things when down there. We could sacrifice location and charm for a more ';clean'; hotel, but as long as I feel like it is sanitary, then I am just fine. Now, I have never come across vomit or bandaids, that may change my mind, but give the Place a try and see if your experience is good. Its a beautiful property.
Quite a few of the reviews while positive, do mention that if you are picky, this isn%26#39;t the place for you. They talk about atmosphere, but not cleanliness, etc. Many found mold, dust, dirty carpets. This is not clean..... I don%26#39;t keep my house like that, and I won%26#39;t sleep in a place like that. The reason I brought up my findings again, is that I wanted to let the original poster know what to expect. If they were looking for very clean, sterile rooms, this was not it. Yes they have great atmosphere, but as pretty as it is, when I%26#39;m in bed at night, I don%26#39;t want the creepie crawlie feeling. I need very clean.., and was just letting them know what I found,. By the way, the fema workers were long gone when I was there, and the hotel advertised themselves as being redone, and ready. I also didn%26#39;t get those great rates we keep reading about because it was french quarter festival, I actually pd 250 for one night....For 250,, you want a nice room...
Hust a quick something extra, check out the candid travelers photos on the hotel review page. That is what you will get...Beautiful courtyard, but look at the rooms.
