I decided to throw together a trip for next weekend to NOLA and take my kids, ages 12 and 9, who have never been, as well as my mother who hasn%26#39;t been in twenty years. Since it%26#39;s a last minute, unplanned trip, I need to stay on a fairly tight budget. Any suggestions of places to eat that we all can enjoy and won%26#39;t have too long of a wait? Luckily, the kids aren%26#39;t to finicky. Just looking for decent food at a decent price. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I have breakfast covered at Cafe du Monde and the jazz brunch at Harrah%26#39;s (freebie!).
Kid friendly (and grandma, too) restaurants
Where is the jazz brunch at Harrah%26#39;s? If the brunch is at the buffet in the casino, the kids aren%26#39;t allowed admission as no one under 18 can enter the casino building. If it%26#39;s at the hotel, you%26#39;re okay.
Deanie%26#39;s Seafood is great, cheap and the kids %26amp; grandma will enjoy. Also, try Gordon Biersch across from the casino. My teens love the garlic fries and burgers.
Kid friendly (and grandma, too) restaurantsYou%26#39;re a lifesaver CajunWave! I would have been really mad if I had gotten down there and the kids not been able to go. The buffet is in the casino, and kids aren%26#39;t allowed, unlike the casinoes in Shreveport, which I%26#39;m more familiar with. Thanks for the suggestions, I think both are close to our hotel, which is perfect.
This poses a new question. Any other jazz brunches besides Court of Two Sisters? I would get my $32 worth, but mom and my kids would not even make a dent.
Does the Praline Connection still have a jazz brunch? I%26#39;m in the same predicament as you gilmer girl..my husband and I are bringing 3 granddaughters to New Orleans in December (ages 8, 12 and 15) and want to take them to a Jazz Brunch. I think that Commanders Palace and Court of Two Sisters both seem a little %26#39;stuffy%26#39; for kids and thought that either Praline Connection and/or House of Blues might have a more upbeat atmosphere, but I%26#39;m not sure if either of those places have resumed having their jazz brunches.
House of Blues isn%26#39;t currently holding their gospel brunch, but Praline Connection%26#39;s website says their Sunday jazz brunch is still around.
Muriel%26#39;s now has a jazz brunch with I believe the Joe Simon trio playing and its 11-2 and it%26#39;s choices on the menu for varying prices. I did hear from one couple that they thought it was pretty good and thats located at the corner of Chartres and St. Ann at Jackson Square. Just a riverfront streetcar ride from the Harrah%26#39;s hotel area.
Thanks everybody! I called Praline Connection and they no longer have that location. I checked Muriel%26#39;s website and they have one with an a la carte menu, with entrees ranging from around $15 -$20, with a pretty good variety for the adults, but french toast appears to be the only kid friendly selection. Muriel%26#39;s it is! Like the kids said, there%26#39;s always a McDonald%26#39;s somewhere if they can%26#39;t find something.
You may want to try Palace Cafe, a Brennan restaurant, for a Jazz Brunch. They offer wonderful food and their website shows a jazz brunch on Sundays from 10:30 - 2:30. It%26#39;s located on Canal Street in the old Werlein (sp?) building.
Though not in the Quarter but in the Warehouse District, Mulate%26#39;s is a fun casual restaurant which features a cajun band with dancing. I haven%26#39;t been since Katrina so you may want to call for times of band (usually at night only). Your children would enjoy it.
Way to update the website, Praline Connection! I think Howlin%26#39; Wolf moved into that CBD location 2-3 years ago. PC on Frenchmen Street is still around but no jazz brunch.
Marigny Brasserie has a great Sunday brunch with live entertainment (the Pfister Sisters usually) but it%26#39;s not what I%26#39;d consider terribly ';kid-friendly.';
We%26#39;ve been to NO many times, but not since Katrina.
Ditto to the post about Deanie%26#39;s--one of our favorites.
Michaul%26#39;s on St. Charles is good IF they are still open--had live Cajun music but very family friendly. It%26#39;s not like a bar.
Madeleine%26#39;s (spelling?) is a little breakfast, light lunch, %26amp; pastry cafe on the corner at Jackson Square. Don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s still open or not, but it was very good.
We also liked Felix%26#39;s, and near the Canal St. end of Bourbon, Captain Mike%26#39;s Seafood. Granny could definitely share a plate there--huge platters.
Please post when you get back to let us know how safe you felt--we want to go back next summer, but still have concerns about safety. We%26#39;d stay in the French Quarter.
I%26#39;ve heard that the FQ is OK, but don%26#39;t dare walk around outside of it. Please advise everyone if this is accurate on your return.. Thanks
Oh, I forgot about the Gumbo Shop--another of our favorites.
