The last time I was in NO I saw a beautiful large red brick building in excellent shape that was facing Jackson Square. When you are facing the cathederal it is on the right side of it. It runs along the side of the park. Does anyone have any idea what this building is. It looks like it might be apartments but I am not sure.

It%26#39;s the Pontalba apartments. The two buildings run on either side of Jackson Square and they are indeed beautiful. Each building has retail on the ground floor and the state-owned apartments are floors 2 and 3, I think.

CajunWave is correct. There is a very long waiting list to get an apartment there also. Thanks CajunWave on the heads up on Fiorello%26#39;s..I%26#39;ll miss their chicken.
Just out of curiosity, any idea what the rents run?
I was wondering the same thing about the rent.
Back in 1996-97 I lived in an apartment in the Upper Pontalba (the City-owned building on the up-river side). It was a two-bedroom third-floor apartment (about 1200 s.f.) with a balcony facing Jackson Square. When I left in %26#39;97 the rent was $1417 per-month. The Upper Pontalba had undergone a major renovation in the mid 90%26#39;s, so it was a more expensive than the Lower Pontalba (the State-owned building on the down-river side of the Square). The City building is managed by the French Market Corporation, which is required by law to periodically adjust rents to keep them competitive with fair-market rates. I have no idea what the rents are now. Second floor apartments are more desirable and carry a higher rent. There are also efficiency apartments on the 4th floor (attic), but these have no balconies.
These buildings actually have quite a history, and the story of the builder (the Baroness Pontalba) has been written in a book that reads like a novel (';Intimate Enemies: The Two Worlds of the Baroness De Pontalba'; by Christina Vella, available on Amazon).
The Pontalba Apartments are said to be the oldest apartment buildings in the US.
