I would like to take my daughter to at least one of these cemeteries as they sound extremely interesting and very NO. She is interested in the Lafayette #1 as it is apparantly shown in the movie, %26#39;Interview with a Vampire%26#39;.
First question...is one particularly better/more interesting than the other?
Second....are the cemetery tours long or require a lot of walking?
(she has walking difficulties) Do we dare go on our own?
Thanks for your help.....
St. Louis #1 cemetery or Lafayette #1 cemetery?
I can%26#39;t tell you anything about the length of the tours, but I%26#39;m sure you could contact Save Our Cemeteries and ask them.

According to their website, the tours last approximately 1 hour. If you go on your own, you%26#39;ll likely not get the full benefit of the history of either place.
I%26#39;m not sure if either of these is a walled cemetery, but I personally would not advise visiting walled cemeteries alone. In the past they were prime locations for tourist muggings because of their ';hidden'; factor. At one point the local authorities were advising people to only visit with a tour or on November 1 (All Saints%26#39; Day) when the cemeteries are crowded and law enforcement was on hand.
St. Louis #1 cemetery or Lafayette #1 cemetery?
The St.Louis #1 save our cemetaries tour leaves from the new Basin St. Station which has parking, restroom facilities, and tourist information so that could be a %26#39;rest%26#39; area before and after or whenever someone gets tired on the tour.
They are both very interesting but I prefer St. Louis #1. My husband and I are in our fifties and have been to both cemetaries many times, and always went on our own. However, every time we have been in the cemetaries, there have been many other people around (tour groups, etc) so we never felt isolated. But, I do think that you would get more from a real tour, as far as who is buried there, history, etc. We have always planned on taking an actual cemetary tour but just never seem to get around to it.
Last August we took the Gray Line ';Cemetery %26amp; Gris Gris Tour'; that was approximately 2 hours. We took a bus to and from the cemetery. The cemetery isn%26#39;t large but be ready for the heat because there was no shade. They suggest you take an umbrella. The tour was very interesting and the guide told us a lot of the history of St. Louis #1, that you wouldn%26#39;t get if you went on your own. If you decide on this tour there is a $7 off coupon on the New Orleans Convention %26amp; Visitors Bureau web-site.
We were down in Dec of 2005 and everything was mostly closed up from Katrina. We took pictures outside of Lafayette #1 because all of the gates were locked. We found one unlocked gate at St. Louis and we ventured inside alone. We didn%26#39;t see anyone, but we did find some nooks that had blankets and clothing and looked like someone%26#39;s home. I didn%26#39;t feel unsafe in there, but I%26#39;m not sure if I would do it with children without the safety of a tour group.
