Transportation in NO

My husband I are thinking about a vacation to NO for our anniversary. I%26#39;m wondering what the best bet is for transportation in the main tourist areas. How is parking vs. public transportation or taxi service? I don%26#39;t mind a little walking, but not so much that it takes time away from seeing all there is to see. I also don%26#39;t want to bother renting a car and paying a bunch for parking if taxi%26#39;s are readily available.

If you are flying in to NO, do not rent a car. Parking in the FQ and CBD at hotels can easily be $30 per day. NO has 2 streetcar lines and good bus routes. Taxis are plentiful and cheap because the main tourist areas are very close to each other. United is the best. Service: 504-522-9771 or 504-524-9606. I always program their number in my cell phone when I visit.

I thoroughly agree with porcupine. You can walk to just about anywhere if you stay at a hotel in the FQ. Don%26#39;t rent a car! No problems getting a cab.

ditto what porc150 said; public transportation is good and cabs are inexpensive.

I did pay $30 for parking at the Sheraton this past weekend%26gt;

So are the street cars up and running ok now? I know they where down for a while . I tryed to get s schedual online and it said they where down but i have noticed mention of them here.

The only streetcar line that is not fully renovated is the st charles line which only goes to Lee Circle at this point but hopefully by Dec. another leg of the route will be completed.

Get an all day pass for the streetcars. It%26#39;s an attraction itself. Take a ride to the ends and back just to get a lay of the land. Then go see what interest you. Almost everything is in easy walking distance and as said earlier taxis are cheap.

I agree with those who have advised against renting a car. Many years ago, my family drove to NO and even then the parking, directions, traffic, etc... were a nightmare. (After driving around for what seemed like forever, we started to joke about how Bourbon Street must be an urban legend. Then again, Dad managed to get us lost in every major metropolitan area we ever visited...lol.) I highly doubt that it%26#39;s any better now.

If you%26#39;re wanting to do any touring outside of the city proper (i.e., swamp tour or plantation tour) the tour company will usually pick you up at your hotel for a reasonable fee or the fee may even be included in the tour cost.

We go to NO about once a year and have never wished that we had a car. Rather, we%26#39;ve been glad to sit back and relax, and let the professionals handle it!
