My partner and I will be travelling from Australia to NOLA in first week of October and staying for three days only ... which would be better for ease around the French Quarter as we will not have a vehicle and cannot afford to stay in high end accom?
I thank you for your responses.
Bed and Breakfast v Hotel in French Quarter
If you%26#39;re interested in the Quarter, there are many affordable hotels right on Bourbon Street. We haven%26#39;t been to New Orleans since the storm so I can%26#39;t provide any names. I suggest you try www.kayak.com to find accomodations in your price range. The airport is quite a ways out of town and I don%26#39;t know what the cab fare to the Quarter would be. October is a nice month with cool temperatures and dry weather normally. Thanks for visiting our fascinating state.
Bed and Breakfast v Hotel in French Quarter
October is a great month but there will be many conventions in town and so the prices will be up a bit at the hotels so its best to book early. You do not need a vehicle. Take a look at the trip advisor listings and narrow it down and ask about them or do a forum search. The taxi is a price fixed at $28 and $1 gas surcharge to go from the airport to the French Quarter. It is the best way to go as the shuttle stops at hotel after hotel and the price is about $16 per person so with two people it is more economical and faster to take a taxi.
Yes, prices will still be a bit high in the French Quarter in October. It%26#39;s a lovely month to be in New Orleans!!
However, there are bargains to be found in accomodations and there are some quaint places to stay that don%26#39;t have that big hotel chain feel to them in the French Quarter. There are some B%26amp;B%26#39;s in the Fauburg Marigny that might be worth a look-see, too. Rates will be a bit lower, but you%26#39;ll have a bit more of a walk to the attractions of the FQ.
In the Quarter ... there are some bargain rooms at Hotel Royal (and some very high-end ones, too). We stayed in one right on the courtyard. Small and lacking in privacy. But it fit the wallet just right and was fine for a short stay (I think we were only there 1 or 2 nights that trip).
Hotel Villa Convento has lots of N.O. charm and good prices. Family owned. Our room was no-frills, but plenty comfortable.
We have stayed at the Chateau Motor Lodge and got a very good rate there.
Place d%26#39; Arms can%26#39;t be beat for central location in the Quarter, yet it is small and does have some bargain rooms. I%26#39;ve been told that some of them are ';interior'; with no windows, so if that bothers you, I%26#39;d ask to be sure.
In October, the weather should be so wonderful that you won%26#39;t be in the room that much anyway.
Have a great time!
Our first visit to New Orleans was April 06 and we were on a budget (couldnt afford a hotel in FQ due to French quarter fest) and we stayed at a B%26amp;B in the Marigny. It was 7 minutes walk to the quarter and we loved it. Staying in a B%26amp;B gives you a more personal touch. The owners tips and hospitality helped make our first visit very special and steered us away from all the tacky parts and real tourist traps. Our second visit June this year we stayed in the quarter at the Place Darmes which is in a great location and a lovely little hotel which we would recommend (we will probably stay there again). I think for a 1st visit a B%26amp;B is a good choice and the locals will help you make the most of your holiday
Thanks everyone for your responses. I was in NOLA for Jazzfest and our accom was at Metairie ... I found it lovely there but would have preferred to be right in the middle of the hum.
I have been perusing hotwire and there is a deal for 3* in the French Quarter for $69 a night which seems reasonable.
I am so so excited about visiting again. I arrived home in Australia saying I have never had my heartstrings pulled so much as when I was in N%26#39;awlins. I just adore it.
