Hi. We%26#39;ll have a rental car and need to stay over one night in / near New Orleans. We%26#39;re arriving into town (from our trip elsewhere on the Gulf Coast) late on a Saturday afternoon with our flight out at noon on Sunday.
I%26#39;d like to find a charming, non-national chain hotel in a safe area that will give us a feel of being in New Orleans. We%26#39;ll have our kids (7 and 11) with us and would like them to experience a little bit of New Orleans (old architecture, courtyard, etc.) We really don%26#39;t want to stay in the French Quarter since we%26#39;ll be there for such as short time and I think it%26#39;s quite a drive to the airport (am I correct?). We don%26#39;t mind driving 10 or 15 minutes to get to the airport on Sunday morning since we don%26#39;t have to be there til 10-10:30am.
I know this request probably sounds weird, but my kids are fairly well-travelled and if we stay at the Hilton or Holiday Inn, they won%26#39;t get that ';New Orleans feel.'; Can anyone recommend a place for us? ...preferably with a pool?
Chaming ';New Orleans'; type hotel near-ish to AP?
Most ';New Orleans-style'; buildings are going to be found in the French Quarter or Garden District. If you stay in the suburbs, you%26#39;ll likely find that the same box hotels you would find in your hometown.
The French Quarter is only 20-25 minutes by car from the airport. The disadvantage to the FQ is the price of parking. For this reason, I%26#39;d suggest Le Richelieu hotel near the French Market. Free parking, neat architecture and a great location!

And remember you will be heading back to the Airport on a Sunday morning and the traffic will be fairly light. Try shopping some rates including parking and make comparisons. Le Richelieu has free parking and sometimes the rate plus parking is very comparable at the Place D%26#39;armes or St. Marie. All have pools and old style FQ architecture.
I think it is great that you want to get a %26#39;New Orleans feel%26#39; at your hotel, but agree that to do that, you will need to stay either in the French Quarter or Garden District. You won%26#39;t get a New Orleans feel by the airport. As others mentioned, LeRichelieu is a very nice hotel with free parking, and it is in a quiet area of the French Quarter. Another hotel that has a New Orleans feel is the Hotel Provincial, also in the quiet part of the French Quarter. I%26#39;m not sure if they have a pool or not, but, since you are going to have such a short amount of time, I%26#39;d forget about swimming and take your kids to see some sights. You could take a buggy ride around the French Quarter, eat at a nice restaurant, shop in the French Market, etc.
Your request isn%26#39;t weird at all - I am bringing my 3 granddaughters to New Orleans in December, and staying where there is a %26#39;New Orleans feel%26#39; is of utmost importance to me, too.
I want to thank you all for your input and suggestions. Le Richelieu, Place D%26#39;Armes and St Marie all look like exactally the types of places I was looking for. HOWEVER, as I found out when trying to make reservations, all three require a minimum of a two-night stay over the weekend....BUMMER...so my search continues....
Any more suggestions??
Did you talk directly to the hotel or just check through the website..sometimes you can %26#39;talk%26#39; your way with one night..
I just got on hotels.com and found many hotels available for Saturday night only. The Inn on Bourbon was $99 plus tax and there was no mention of a 2 night minimum. Are you coming over Labor Day weekend by any chance...I think that most places do have minimum requirements for that weekend.
I know you are not interested in a national chain, but you might consider Holiday Inn French Quarter-Chateau Lemoyne. It is reasonably priced (although parking is a bit expensive). It is not your typical Holiday Inn. It has an authentic French Quarter ';feel'; to it. It is in a great location in the FQ and even when you factor in the price of parking, it is a considerably better value than nearby hotels. The reviews on Tripadvisor are pretty decent and if you go to Holiday Inn%26#39;s web site, they have a number of pictures. Also, you can book for one night and they have a nice pool.
I%26#39;d rather sleep curled up next to a Lucky Dog wagon than ever stay in the Holiday Inn-Chateau Lemoyne.
TariTari...If you are coming along the Gulf Coast and taking I-10 West stop in the Welcome Station for the State of Louisiana..they might have discount coupons, maps, and other helpful suggestions for your quick visit. And there are many restaurants that are offering price fixed three course meal specials now through September 30th which are great deals.
Canjunyank, Thanks for ';your opinion'; but according to Tripadvisor reviews, there are plenty of people who would respectfully disagree with you.
