To New Orleans!
I know this is off topic because it isn%26#39;t really ';tourist'; related, but I%26#39;m going to move to New Orleans in May! It%26#39;s a long time away but I had to wait till my lease is up in Cleveland.
So my question is, where should I live and how easy is it to get a job? I%26#39;m a secretary now and I like doing that, or I%26#39;d want to work for a tour company. Also, I live in the ';gay'; section of Cleveland, and I love it, so I want an area sort of trendy and not expensive for a two bedroom.
My idea situation would be to work wherever and be able to take a streetcar to work. If anyone has any ideas, or anything, you can PM me also.
I apologize for taking up space in the forum since it%26#39;s not travel related, but you guys are the best and the NOLA.COM forum is frightening!
I'm moving....
Not like I can help you in any way, just wanted to say good luck, I know how much you love New Orleans.
I'm moving....
Tanya, you go girl! You are living my dream. I know you have mentioned before that you want to live in New Orleans, and I had hoped that you would make that move before %26#39;life%26#39; gets in the way (being at your job for so many years that you don%26#39;t want to make a move, buying a house and not wanting to move, having kids and not wanting to move them away from relatives, etc.)...definitely, if you are going to move to a different state, the time to do it is before you are tied down with kids, family obligations, mortgage, etc.
I would say that if you want to live in the gay section, that would definitely be the French Quarter, which would probably be very expensive, or the Faubourg Marigny, which might be not as expensive. Hopefully the locals will be of help on that.
Good luck!!
haha all I have is a cat and a boyfriend, and if he doesn%26#39;t want to come, then just a cat!
I figure I can give my younger brother a lot of my furniture and sell my larger items (kinda feeling stupid for buying that king size bed last fall...) and put my clothes, computer, and Liz and her cat tree in my beetle and we can journey on down and I can buy whatever I would need down there. I am only sad there isn%26#39;t an IKEA any closer than Atlanta!
Tanya, where do you plan on living in NO? The FQ is very expensive. Are you going to buy or rent?
I%26#39;m going to rent. If my bf comes with me, I%26#39;d like the rent to be below $1,200. If it%26#39;s just me, then I%26#39;ll probably find a roomie somewhere. There are postings on craigslist for people who want roommates, so hopefully either way it%26#39;ll work out.
I don%26#39;t care where I live as long as it%26#39;s a streetcar ride away or a few block walk to the FQ/Other areas that are happenin%26#39; and somewhere I won%26#39;t get shot at on the regular. Where I live now is a few blocks from the ghetto, but I am fine with it, it%26#39;s a great funky/artistic area and you have to make sacrifices
Tanya, my ex-girlfriend used to live in the Georgian Apartments in the garden district. That was a nice area. Also, have you ever been to City Park? If you have you know of the HUGE apartments across the street. That is right on the end of the streetcar line. Both places have apartments in your price range.
Wow, what a change it is going to be. So you live in lakewood?
you%26#39;ll have no problem finding a job, we are desparately in need of good employees. use craigslist. a month or so before you are ready to move. also check out help wanted on nola.com.
Being a tour guide is very tourist %26amp; convention oriented, right now thats not booming, but clerical workers are in demand. I know several people who are hiring.
most of the business district isn%26#39;t on the streetcar line, but the perfect scenario would be a condo on St Charles and a job in 1 Shell Square.
Houston has an IKEA, it%26#39;s aliitle closer than Atlanta.
Tiffy-
I live in Cleveland, right by edgewater park if you%26#39;re familiar with the area. Basically, it%26#39;s the border of Lakewood/Cleveland and it%26#39;s the ';gay'; area and I absolutely love it! Everyone is really friendly and it%26#39;s great for walking my dog and going to work, it%26#39;s 15 minutes from my front door to my office.
Zylia-
How far is houston from New Orleans? I don%26#39;t know if any of you have ever been to IKEA, but it%26#39;s changed my life, haha. Inexpensive furniture that I can build myself and mix and match, perfect for poor students/secretaries like me!
I%26#39;m definitely a people-person, so I love being a secretary but I gotta find something where I can interact with people or I%26#39;ll go crazy. Also, what is 1 shell square?
Craigslist is the best website ever, I have found every apartment I%26#39;ve lived in and my current job on that baby. I usually have one requirement for wherever I work and live and it%26#39;s never failed....to be within walking distance from a Starbucks! As a matter of fact, the building I work in has a starbucks downstairs!
I am familiar with that area....that is why I mentioned Lakewood. I actually love that area, the old homes and such.
I live in Akron, but used to work in Cleveland and my husband works in downtown Cleveland now. I wish I could move like that. Godd luck!!! Keep us posted on how it goes.
